I apologize for getting behind on the Class News. I am finally feeling recovered from this winter's colds and flu.
Students will have District Benchmark testing in Math and Language Arts this week.
Our Valentines Day class party is coming up next week on February 14, 2017. A class list was sent home on Monday along with ideas for a Valentine Mailbox. In third grade, students get to make Valentine Mailboxes. Students can use their imagination to make a fun themed box or decorate it with fun designs or pictures of favorite things. Students can make or purchase valentines for classmates. Please put a "to" and "from" on each Valentine. Our party will be early in the day with a breakfast theme of donuts, fruit, and hot chocolate. Thank You to our room parents for organizing this fun event.
Students will not have spelling or math homework this week because of Benchmark Testing and Valentine preparations.
Language Arts:
This week, we continue in the novel Charlotte's Web, chapters 10-12. Students will have nightly re-reading of one chapter, and one question to answer in the Reading Response Journal. RRJ questions are to be answered in complete sentences.
Please remember: Student are not to read ahead or watch any of the Charlotte's Web movies until we finish the novel!
Writing: Students are writing and imaginative narrative about an amazing snow filled day and magical adventure.
Math:
Our final set of Multiplication Facts: the 6s!! Yay! Make-up tests will also be given for any time tests not passed.
We continue practicing multiplication and division concepts.
Use the following strategies.
Monday: Memorize counting by the week's number. Look for patterns and tricks to help memorize difficult facts.
Tuesday: Practice with flash cards just using the facts for the week.
Wednesday: Use the practice test for speed. Say the answers aloud but don't write on the test unless you've made a copy.
Thursday: Use the practice test to take an actual timed test.
Social Studies:
Students wrote poems last week about life as a Tongva Native American. Each student did a great job reciting their poem. The Tongva replicas came out amazing.
Homework:
Please preview your child's homework sheet each Monday. More details about weekly homework can be found under the homework tab. All homework assignments are due the following day unless noted otherwise. Reading homework may be read independently or with an adult depending on your child's reading level. Please sign your child's homework sheet each week when you have previewed the week's expectations. Students are usually given two days to complete any written works. This give them a chance to ask questions at school if they have any.
STAR STUDENT:
Each student will have a week when they get to be our classroom STAR STUDENT. On Tuesday of each student's special STAR STUDENT week, he or she will get to share the poster he or she made in September. Students can also bring in small items to share with the class and decorate the STAR STUDENT windowsill. Posters will be shared on Tuesday of each week. Classmates will complete a Star of the Week book each week for our Star Student.
This week's STAR STUDENT is Trenton Loyd. Next week's Star Student is Natalie Meschuk.
