Our first field trip is next week. We will be going to the Environmental Nature Center. Students will be learning about native plants of Orange County and traveling back in time to experience many aspects of life as a Native American. Two parents may join the class as chaperones. Additonal parents may join us for a fee of somewhere around $12.00. Let me know if you'd like to attend.
Future field trips, such as Bolsa Chica, will be open for many more parents to join us.
Language Arts:
This week, we begin the novel Charlotte's Web. Students will have vocabulary each week and chapters to reread at home. For each chapter,students will have questions to answer in thier (RRJ) reading response journal. RRJ questions are to be answered in complete sentences and may become homework at times. We will begin with chapter one on Tuesday.
Please remember: Student are not to read ahead or watch any of the Charlotte's Web movies until we finish the novel!
This week students will also be reading about Native Americans.
Writing: Students are writing factual text this week about OC landforms and OC Native Americans.
Math:
Multiplication Facts: 9s this week and make-up tests for any time tests not passed. Use the following strategies.
Monday: Memorize counting by the week's number. Look for patterns and tricks to help memorize difficult facts.
Tuesday: Practice with flash cards just using the facts for the week.
Wednesday: Use the practice test for speed. Say the answers aloud but don't write on the test unless you've made a copy.
Thursday: Use the practice test to take an actual timed test.
Social Studies:
We continue learning about Orange County Landforms and OC Native Americans.
Science:
We begin Life Cycles of Plants and Animals. Students will be choosing an animal and a book for an animal report over the next two weeks.
Homework:
Please preview your child's homework sheet each Monday. More details about weekly homework can be found under the homework tab. All homework assignments are due the following day unless noted otherwise. Reading homework may be read independently or with an adult depending on your child's reading level. Please sign your child's homework sheet each week when you have previewed the week's expectations. Students are usually given two days to complete any written works. This give them a chance to ask questions at school if they have any.
STAR STUDENT:
Each student will have a week when they get to be our classroom STAR STUDENT. On Tuesday of each student's special STAR STUDENT week, he or she will get to share the poster he or she made in September. Students can also bring in small items to share with the class and decorate the STAR STUDENT windowsill. Posters will be shared on Tuesday of each week. Classmates will complete a Star of the Week book each week for our Star Student.
